History of the Artifact
Now available to you are genuine Ancient Greek silver ‘Obols’ - 2400+ year old coins from Classical Greece!
These coins were minted now well over 2 millennia ago in a time when stories of Heroes, Poets, Gorgons and Cyclops captivated the minds of the sailors, kings and warriors that traded with these very coins.
In Classical Greece, six Obols made up the drachma (a larger silver Greek coin, similar to the Roman Denarius). With one Obol, an ancient Greek could purchase a “Kantharos” of Wine (Cup of Wine), approximately 3 L or 100 US fl oz of Wine. Three obols was standard rate for prostitutes.
Obols had a variety of designs stamped into them based on the region in which they were produced. Athenian obols were typically emblazoned with the face of Athena on one side, and an owl on the reverse; other regions in Greece had various designs also featuring mythological creatures and gods.
The Obol also played an important role in ancient Greek funeral practices: the deceased were buried with an obol placed in the mouth of the corpse, so that—once a deceased's shade reached Hades—they would be able to pay Charon for passage across the river Acheron or Styx.
The Obol you will receive will be of very similar size and quality as the ones shown in the pictures. A coin similar to the ones pictured is guaranteed or your money back! The display case included is openable so that you may easily handle and closely observe the artifact.
