The name ‘Mosasaurus’ refers to a group of extinct aquatic reptiles who lived from about 99 to 66 million years ago in what is known as the ‘Late Cretaceous Period’.

Paleontologists have estimated the largest specimens of Mosasaurus’ to be up to 14 meters (46ft) in length. The Mosasaurus was a fearsome creature, equipped with robust jaws lined with dozens of sharp teeth capable of powerful bites and adapted for cutting prey. 

The Mosasaurus inhabited much of the Atlantic Ocean; however, fossil evidence has also been detected in seaways adjacent to Africa, Western Asia and Antartica. In these oceans, the Mosasaurus was a common larged predator usually found at the top of the food chain with a diet composed of bony fish, sharks, marine reptiles such as turtles and even other Mosasaurs.
